🏰 Historical Background

  • 1640: The French constructed a wooden fort near the indigenous village of Parmurbo (later Paramaribo).

  • 1651: The English seized the fort, reinforced it with stone, and renamed it Fort Willoughby.

  • 1667: During the Second Anglo-Dutch War, Dutch Admiral Abraham Crijnssen captured the fort, renaming it Fort Zeelandia after the Dutch province of Zeeland .
